What do you enjoy most about helping patients/clients?
I just love seeing people who tell me that they are able to do things they thought they wouldn’t be able to do again.
How would your patients/clients describe you?
Friendly with a hearty laugh. Never seems to be a day in clinic that someone doesn’t comment on my laugh.
What is one piece of advice you wish everyone knew about pain or injuries?
Pain does not have to be permanent. Getting the right advice and doing the right things will always help ease pain.
What's your favourite success story?
I once had a client who had severe back pain that was restricting her from getting out of the house and doing her shopping. She loved walking into the town most days. When her back pain stopped her doing this I could really feel her despair. However, once she had completed her treatment and attended our Pilates classes, her back pain had gone. I still see her from time to time in Lisburn town centre walking blissfully painfree with her shopping bags. It’s an amazing success story.
Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy skiing with my family, but I also play a lot of pickleball
Favourite way to stay active?
Play pickleball or go to the gym
What's something people would be surprised to know about you?
I once owned and rode a motorbike
What treatment techniques do you enjoy using?
I enjoy the hands on side of treatment as I feel I can get a good gauge of stiffness and tightness in peoples bodies and then manual therapy techniques I use help to relieve these problems.
What inspired you to become a Physiotherapist / Sports Therapist/Sports Rehabilitator?
My mum was a nurse so I guess I’ve always had a sense of wanting to help people, and helping them overcome debilitating injuries gives me a real sense that I’ve made a difference in their lives.
What types of conditions do you particularly enjoy treating?
Back pain, Sports injuries, Running injuries, Arthritis, Knee pain
What does a typical appointment with you look like?
A client will come and see me and we will take our time to have a good chat to find out exactly what the problem is, what it stops them from doing, perform a series of tests and get to the root cause of the problem before formulating a treatment plan
What areas of physiotherapy are you currently studying?
I’m always learning from other people techniques and procedures for easing back pain.
Which courses or qualifications are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of my physiotherapy degree as I guess I had a number of people who doubted I would be able to actually do it. Well I proved them all wrong!
If someone was nervous about booking physiotherapy, what would you say to them?
It’s normal for people to be apprehensive, however honestly, please just come in and see us, let us listen to you and then let us show you how we can help. You can make your mind up from there. Remember we are here to help you, not cause more pain or problems.
What's the biggest myth about physiotherapy?
‘No pain, no gain”. I just don’t like that. Physiotherapy shouldn’t make any problem worse. Some things may be tender post treatment but that will generally ease quickly. The no pain no gain motto I would say can work for people who are training to get fit.
What do you hope every patient feels when they leave your treatment room?
I want people to leave my treatment room with a greater understanding of their condition and a vision and plan of how they are going to get better!
