Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a treatment that uses slower, firmer pressure to work into deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It is often used when muscles feel persistently tight, heavy, restricted or uncomfortable.
At Gav Noble Physiotherapy, deep tissue massage is delivered with care and clinical awareness. The aim is not to press as hard as possible. The aim is to apply the right level of pressure to help reduce muscle tension, improve comfort and allow you to move more freely.

Deep tissue massage may be suitable for people with:
- Persistent muscle tightness
- Stiff neck, shoulders or back
- Tight hips, glutes, calves or hamstrings
- Muscle tension linked to work, posture or activity
- Areas that feel restricted or overloaded
- General aches from repetitive strain or physical work
How Is It Different From Sports Massage?
Sports massage is usually more focused on activity, training, recovery and performance. It may be used before or after sport, during a training programme, or to help active people manage muscle soreness and overload.
Deep tissue massage is less about sport specifically and more about working into deeper areas of muscle tension. You do not need to be sporty to benefit from it. In fact, plenty of people need it simply because their shoulders have been living permanently beside their ears.
How Is It Different From Therapeutic Massage?
Therapeutic massage is usually gentler and more focused on relaxation, comfort and general muscle tension.
Deep tissue massage is typically firmer, slower and more targeted. It may focus on specific areas that feel particularly tight or restricted, rather than providing a lighter, whole-body relaxation approach.
That said, deep tissue massage should still be tolerable. Pain is not the goal. If treatment feels too intense, your therapist can adjust the pressure.
What Are The Benefits?
Deep tissue massage may help to:
- Reduce muscle tension
- Improve short-term flexibility and comfort
- Ease stiffness in targeted areas
- Improve awareness of overloaded muscles
- Support relaxation in people who prefer firmer pressure
- Help movement feel easier
If your pain keeps returning, travels down the arm or leg, causes numbness, weakness, pins and needles, balance issues, or stops you doing normal daily activities, a physiotherapy assessment may be more appropriate.

Can it fix the cause of my pain?
